September 2017 Newsletter - Welwyn Garden City FC Social Club

Welcome to the September 2017 Newslettter. We have lots of positives to report this month.

Firstly, I am delighted to advise that our new kitchen is finally completed as are the disabled toilets. Its been a very long road but we are getting there. The next item on the agenda is re-decorating the clubhouse which will take place in the week of 23-27 October so please forgive further disruption, but it is for all our members and visitors benefit to get this sorted. We are also working on obtaining some new furniture. Fingers crossed it will all come together and we can celebrate a lovely new clubhouse. The Tottenham turnstiles will also be going in the same week as we have been extremely fortunate to have received incredible support from a Charity called VIY who work with Wickes to encourage young people into employment. See the full details below. We are really proud to take part in this scheme and we thank Wickes for their support.

Following all this work and hopefully having completed, we have set a date for our Opening Ceremony for 12 November 2017. This is an obligation of our grant from the Football Foundation. We are planning a big event and we hope as many of you as possible will join us. Of course, this is also Remembrance Sunday and we will be doing a short service to acknowledge this important date. More details below.

This Saturday sees us hosting Brackley Town Saints in the First Round Qualifying of the Buildbase FA Vase. Please come down and show your support. Entrance is £6 per adult, U16's Free and OAP's £3. Unfortunately, Season Ticket Holders are unable to use their tickets on this day due to FA rules.

We have booked our Fireworks night for Friday 3 November and this year, it will be a ticketed event to stop the amount of unaccompanied youth, who attended last year. This is a Family Community Event and means a lot to us as it is our biggest fundraiser and event in the whole years calendar. We are looking for as much support and help on the night, so please get in touch if you are free to volunteer your help. Further details below.

And before you blink an eye, Christmas will be upon us! Sorry folks to remind you in September but with all that is going on at the club, its important you are reminded of our Christmas Craft Fair which will take place at the club on Sunday 3 December. Make a note in your diaries and please come along. You may just find some incredible gifts for your family and friends that are unique and beautifully hand made. Another date for your diary and more details below.

Please do join us if you can for any or all of our events as this is how our club survives, with support from our Members and our Community. Thank you

Have you renewed your membership?? If not, please see Maureen Hay, our Membership Secretary. You can email her at m.hay7@ntlworld.com or ask at the bar for a membership form. I have also attached a form for you here in case you are unable to get in. Please be advised that our renewal date is 1 April every year so unfortunately, if you did not renew at that time, you will still have to pay a full years subscription which will become due for renewal in April 2018.

Thanks to Karen Browne, who has been our Football Secretary and Programme Editor on and off for many years. Sadly, Karen has resigned her post as of end of August. Karen will continue as the League Fixtures Secretary but will no longer be working with our club. We wish her well and hope she enjoys her free time, which I am sure she will have more of now she is not bogged down with the clubs business.

We would like to offer our thanks to Phil Ravitz for taking over the role of Football Secretary from Karen Browne. Phil has done a brilliant job so far and I have been happy to assist him as we both learn the ropes - not an easy task at all and very time consuming. So thank you Phil for a great job so far. Things can only get better as we move forward and I am quite sure you will do us proud.

We would also like to thank Joe Croft for stepping up to the mark with the Development U25's in Russell Giblins absence due to him getting married. You have also done a great job Joe so thank you from all at WGC FC. Please see Joe's report below.

Thanks must also go to all our players and managers, and in particular, 1st team captain, Danny Payne, who have made an excellent start to this season with regards to respect and bookings. We are delighted with the huge effort they have all made on the pitch and are also thrilled to see them using the clubhouse more frequently. Well done lads and please keep up the good work.

And last but by no means least, a HUGE thank you to all of this Seasons sponsors, old and new who have supported us this Season. Our club could not survive without you so on behalf of all at WGC FC - THANK YOU!

If you are interested in sponsoring a Match Ball for any of our Home Games, please let me know 7 days in advance of a scheduled match so that we have time to enter it into - Fixtures may be found at https://goo.gl/LNwye2

FIRST TEAM - Report courtesy of Phil Ravitz - Press Officer and Football Secretary

OUR first team surrendered the only 100 per cent record in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division in a goalless draw with London Tigers at Northwood, in a totally forgettable match, in which the home opposition indulged in every form of gamesmanship they could think of, but that was a single blot on a very impressive start to the season.

Prior to that untidy, forgettable encounter, the first team had won their first three league games to the tune of nine goals scored and just one conceded to be the division’s only side with a 100 per cent record, albeit very early in the campaign.

The sole disappointment was a very early FA Cup exit, 4-2 here at Herns Lane to North Greenford United. Ironically, North Greenford went out 3-1 in the next round to SSML Div 1 side Baldock Town, whom we had beaten comfortably 3-1 the previous week in the Herts Charity Shield.

Baldock have since won a further tie in the competition and are now into the FA Cup’s second qualifying round – funny old game, football!!

Despite that setback, cup progress has been made in the SSML’s League Trophy and Premier Cup, as well as the Charity Shield and we have a home draw in the Herts Senior Cup in November, where we will entertain Leverstock Green, here at Herns Lane.

The FA Vase now remains our main cup objective and that campaign starts this weekend.

DEVELOPMENT U25 - Report Courtesy of Joe Croft - Assistant Manager

"Well the first Game of the season didn't quite go to plan v Hoddesdon Town FC U25's. We started the game really well and dominated from the off and were rewarded with an early goal by playing great football from back to front, we made seven passes from the keeper to the striker, who went on to score. With Hoddesdon having 11 men behind the ball they managed to get a break from a Welwyn corner and proceeded to score just before half time. Second-half, we looked strong enough to go on and win the game, putting ball after ball into their box but a second was not forthcoming. Unfortunately the final goal of the game came from a bad defensive error on our part which proved costly at the final whistle. Final score at full time was 1-2

Whilst we need to be more clinical in front of goal, there are a lot of positives to take out of this. Having 70 to 75% possession most of the game and having a good opposition team pinned in their own half, proves we are going in the right direction as a team. We move onto Wednesday evening and will pick ourselves up and hopefully get a positive result. We are looking in good shape this season and are hoping to push on as much as we can".

Please show your support wherever you can - Entrance to all Development U25 games is free.

This years draw see's us pitched against Brackley Town Saints. This is the Reserve Team of Brackley Town FC of the Vanarama League (National League North). This will be an exiting and important game and the our lads our out to prove themselves, following their recent defeat in the FA Cup. So please do come along and show your support to YOUR towns football club. It will mean everything to the Management and Players to have a good turn out so hope to see lots of WGC Citizens at Herns Way this Saturday. And delighted to advise, finally, that our brand new kitchen will be open for hot food and drinks. Normal entrance prices apply but we are unable to accept Season Tickets and Members Half Price Entrance at this game so please be aware of this before attending. Thank you.

As mentioned above, we are delighted to be working with the Charity VIY together with Wickes, to offer ten young adults aged 14-25, an opportunity to earn a City and Guilds accreditation in Painting and Decorating.

VIY combines volunteering and DIY by challenging young people aged 14-25 to learn trade and building skills, on the job, by committing to fix youth club and community centre buildings in need of repair or improvement. Participants are mentored by professional tradespeople, who also volunteer their time, and can gain vocational skills accreditations as well as access to further training, work placement and apprenticeship progression opportunities beyond VIY.

Welwyn Garden City Football Club have been very fortunate to have been selected by VIY in partnership with Wickes to help us complete some Ground Grading requirements by building a turnstile housing for 2 turnstiles and to fully redecorate our clubhouse internally. This project will take place over 5 days, between 23 and 27 October 2017

If you, or someone you know, is interested in this project, please email me as soon as possible for a Registration Form. Applicants will be accepted on a first come first serve basis and we will set up a Reserve List once the list is full. We have already taken some registrations and with the schools now back, I would advise you get in touch as soon as possible to register. Thank You.

One of the conditions of our Grant from the Football Foundation is that once the works are completed, we must hold an opening ceremony. We had a very small window of dates and have chosen the 12 November. We are aware that this is Remembrance Sunday and there will be a small ceremony to mark this important date in everyone's calendars. We are hoping for a couple of celebrities to attend (waiting on confirmation) but I am delighted to confirm that the Mayor will be in attendance from 12,30pm along with officials from the Herts FA, The FA, The Football Foundation and Welwyn Hatfield Sports Partnership.

We are planning lots of fun things to do on the day and we really hope our Community will get behind us, come along and take a look at all the hard work we have put into the club over the past and very long 18 months. Including new toilets both Clubhouse and Members Bar, brand new kitchen, new disabled toilets with shower, and shortly, a full redecoration of the whole clubhouse. We really believe in our club and want our Community to come along and see what a bunch of Volunteers can achieve through hard work, passion and commitment. We are all so proud of our club and cannot wait to show it off.
